Historical Milestones (1823 – Present)

Founding of the Baptist Union (July 1877)
Representatives from four English-speaking churches and one German-speaking congregation met in Grahamstown to formally form the Baptist Union of South Africa, establishing a unified union of autonomous local churches.
Baptist Principles & Distinctives
Rooted in Scripture and historic Christian doctrine, the Baptist Union of Southern Africa upholds these foundational convictions.
Direct Lordship of Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the supreme Lord and divine authority over every local church and believer. No earthly hierarchy supersedes His Word.
Autonomy of the Local Church
Each local congregation is self-governing under Christ, voluntary in fellowship, and responsible for managing its own ministry, pastoral calling, and finances.
Believer’s Baptism by Immersion
Baptism is administered to individuals who confess faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, symbolizing burial and resurrection with Him through total immersion.
Congregational Church Governance
Members of the local church meet in prayerful assembly to collectively discern the will of God, vote on pastoral calls, and approve church leadership.
Priesthood of All Believers
Every believer has direct access to God through Jesus Christ without needing human mediators, and is spiritually gifted for ministry and service.
Religious Liberty & Freedom
Freedom of conscience and worship is a God-given right for all people. The state must guarantee religious freedom without coercion.

Recognizing the importance of preserving historical documents and heritage, the Baptist Union of Southern Africa maintains comprehensive archives housed at the Baptist Theological College (BTC) campus in Randburg, Johannesburg.
